Free national parks entry — Aug. 4
Aug. 4 is the anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act of 2020, which provides funding so national parks and public lands can improve their infrastructure and expand recreation opportunities.
In celebration, all National Park Service sites that typically charge entrance fees will be offering free admission to all visitors.
Tax-free shopping — various dates in August
Enjoy tax breaks on back-to-school shopping in several states in August. Items ranging from school supplies to clothing are exempt from taxes in various places this month.

Free root beer float — Aug. 6
Aug. 6 is National Root Beer Float Day. To celebrate, A&W usually offers free floats to guests on that day, which this year is Tuesday.
Visit a participating U.S. A&W Restaurant ready to show off your “Float Flex,” which A&W describes as “your best physique-flaunting pose,” from 2-8 p.m. to get your free float. Strength is needed, A&W says, to handle what might be “the heaviest drink in fast food” at 3 pounds, 5 ounces.
Free college courses — ongoing
Wonder what it’s like to attend an Ivy League university? Well, now you can find out — for free!
Elite schools — such as Columbia, Harvard, Princeton, Yale and others — will allow you to audit certain courses online, with no charge. For more details, check out “8 Ivy League Colleges That Offer Free Online Courses.”
Some more exciting news for senior citizens looking to boost their knowledge: Several colleges — including Clemson University, Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Connecticut and the University of Maryland, College Park — allow retirement-age students to audit classes or earn actual college credits for free. Free video game — until Aug. 8
The Epic Games Store is still offering the video game “FIST: Forged in Shadow Torch” to players for free until 10 a.m. Central on Aug. 1.
After that deadline, “Lumbearjack” will be the free game offered by the Epic Games Store until Aug. 8. Game Rant describes it as “a puzzle game about a bear trying to reclaim nature by destroying various man-made things in the forest.”
Free streaming services — ongoing
Thinking about cutting the cord? These freebies might make your decision a bit easier.
There are several movie streaming sites –including Comet, Crackle, Documentary+ and Tubi — that don’t require a paid subscription. The only caveat? You won’t be able to skip the commercials. Learn more in “21 Streaming Services That Are Completely Free.”
Free brownie — until Aug. 10
Celebrate Team USA at the Olympics! Firehouse Subs is giving away a free “star-spangled brownie” through Aug. 10. Just use code HOMEOFTHEBRAVE when ordering through the app or online. You have to spend a minimum of $3 to get the brownie.
Free Chick-fil-A offers — through Aug. 17
If you go to the Chick-fil-A app and play a game under “Code Moo,” you can get a new deal or freebie every week. Available through Aug. 17, while supplies last.
Free tampons — ongoing
The website doesn’t specify an end date, but the period-products company August is currently giving away a free box of tampons through Target. To get the code, just visit August’s website, scroll to the bottom of the page, and input your phone number.
Plus, August is also paying customers back any taxes they had to pay on period products since some states tax them as “non-essential goods.”
Free skincare serum — while supplies last
La Roche-Posay is giving away sample-size bottles of their Mela B3 Dark Spot Serum. No purchase is required, but you must be at least 18 years of age to redeem the offer. You’ll have to provide your phone number and, of course, shipping address.
Free dental care – ongoing
Visits to the dentist can be expensive. And as inflation surges, some people with low incomes may be tempted to skip this important care.
But if you qualify, dental services can be free. Dentists around the nation volunteer to join the Donated Dental Services program, which offers care to those who meet one of the following criteria:
- Have a permanent disability
- Are over 65
- Are medically compromised and do not have enough money to pay for dental care
