In an exploration of median home prices for Q3 in the United States, Forbes found Iowa to be the lowest in the nation. In the state’s fastest rising market of Burlington, the median price per square foot was just $98, meaning with $4 million, one could theoretically purchase an over 40,000-square-foot home. By comparison, in New York City, where the median price per square foot was $1,444, $4 million puts you in the 2,700-square-feet range.
Read on to find out what $4 million will get you in other distinct markets across the U.S.

Maui, Hawaii
Price per square foot: $1,807
Built in 2000, this Maui property at 340 Pualoa Nani Place was updated throughout 2020. One of the most significant improvements was the addition of 25 photovoltaic panels, providing eco-conscious energy throughout the home, including the two Tesla Powerwall units. Apart from utilities, the 2,200-square-foot abode also saw updates to its style and design, with the original aesthetic being replaced by a more refined, modern interior. A sleek kitchen features Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances and a sprawling double-waterfall island with seating. Wide sliding glass doors allow for a breezy, open living space. What needed no improvement was the property’s exceptional location. Perched on coastal hills, the home boasts far-reaching views of the ocean and the outer island, perhaps best viewed from the upper lanai. Other outdoor highlights include a pergola with a natural-edge bar top, stone sundeck and swimming pool.
