Methodology
First, we determined the factors (metrics) that are most relevant to rank the Best Cities for Hiking. We then assigned a weight to each factor based on its importance and grouped those factors into five categories: Hiking Access, Hiking Quality, Supplies Access, Climate, and Safety. Here are the categories:
- Number of Hiking Routes
- Number of Camping Sites Within 50 Miles
- Number of Top-Rated Hiking Trails
- Average Consumer Rating for Hiking Trails
- Average Number of Reviews per Hiking Trail
- Share of “Moderately Difficult” and “Hard” Hiking Trails
- Number of Outdoor Gear Stores
- Historical Annual Average Number of Extremely Cold Days
- Historical Annual Average Number of Extremely Hot Days
- Historical Monthly Average Percentage of Sunshine
- Historical Monthly Average Inches of Precipitation
- Median Air Quality Index
- Natural Hazards Index
- Natural/Environmental Death Rate
- Crime Index
Finally, we calculated scores (out of 100 points) for each city to determine its rank in each factor, each category, and overall. A city’s Overall Score is the average of its scores across all factors and categories. The highest Overall Score ranked “Best” (No. 1).
